Born 22 May 1945 in Neosho, Missouri. (Sam Houston lived at “Wigwam Neosho” for awhile)

Moved to Sam Houston’s original homestead property in Huntsville, Texas in 1950 along with his parents and two older sisters.

Grew up in Sam Houston Park on the campus of now Sam Houston State University where his father taught until his retirement in 1970.

Russell was employed at an early age growing vegetables to sell in the neighborhood, doing carpentry work, selling greeting cards, manufacturing and selling football stadium seats, collecting discarded pop bottles to turn in for the two cent deposit, and selling stamps and stamp albums from 1950-1953.

In 1953 he was a founding partner in Educational Filmstrips Company which became Educational Video Network in 1989. Over the course of the last 55 years, he has participated in the production of over 1,000 filmstrips, videos, and DVD’s. Russell has served EVN as CEO for over 25 years. The current catalog of educational media productions can be found at

The “Ethician Arts” division of EVN, Inc. released its first feature horror movie in May 2008. The movie, entitled LONG PIG is an allegory created by Russell that points out the religious hypocrisy that seems to permeate American society as well as how we are not only figuratively cannibalizing each other but the biosphere as well.

Russell founded The Universal Ethician Church in 1970 to promote a religious understanding about the critical need to care for what Christians, Jews, and Muslims call “Creation” and to work toward peace and understanding between all faith traditions. (

Lands were purchased by the Russell family for the establishment of the world’s first “green” family cemetery in 2000. (

Russell is also the founder of The Patriot Network. (
